Warning! This is a must read Before you consider doing a court overlay

A court overlay is simply adding a layer of new asphalt over the existing damaged court. The problem with doing a overlay is its a short term temporary fix and in NJPS Courts opinion its a waste of time and money unless its done the right way which is 99% of the time its not done right due to the un-experience of the contractors that is doing the work. Any asphalt companies can do an overlay but most of them can’t do it the way it should be done. Asphalt companies don’t see the aftermath of their work years down the road because most asphalt companies only give a 6 month warranty on the work if even that. With a good Tennis Pickleball Basketball Court Contractor working with an asphalt company will make a big difference in getting an overlay asphalt job completed the right way. The Tennis Pickleball Basketball Court contractor see the aftermath of these overlays because the court contractor main business is fixing this courts and some of the biggest problems NJPS Courts see when we do repairs is a bad overlay job or a cheap foundation job because the only thing that hold asphalt together is a good foundation base so this is where you get what you pay for comes in to play because most customers take the cheapest quote then later suffer the consequences of not doing the research on getting these projects done correctly. This is where you need to compare apples to apples. One contractor may quote you just applying 2” of asphalt on top of your damaged court and the problems will be low spots that was holding water before the work was done will still be there because the machine that applied the asphalt will only apply the asphalt, it will not level low spots areas that’s on the court, that’s up to the contractor to level them but the problem is if the customer don’t tell them that they have low spots then the contractor won’t know to fix them. The other problem will be the same cracks that was just covered will come though the new asphalt within a year. And another contractor quote may be higher adding things like filling in the cracks and leveling low spots and adding a fabric over the existing cracks to avoid the old cracks coming through the new asphalt surface, The cost will be more but better chance on the court lasting a lot longer. At NJPS Courts We prefer not to do any overlays jobs if possible for the reason of just like a house, if the house is build on a bad foundation then you will always have cracks in the walls and basement concrete floor. That’s the same for a Tennis Pickleball Basketball Courts, If the old court was build with a thin gravel base then putting more asphalt on top will not fix it, it will only add to the weight on that bad base and cracks will start to transfer from the old court to the new surface in a short time fame. NJPS Courts prefer to mill down the old surface and add more base to the old base to make for a stronger foundation then add 2’ of asphalt and level then add an additional 2” to get a perfect level playing area. Keep in mind this will cost more but will last over 20 years without have cracks forming on the court.
